UCI
2006/11/22 1 commentUCI is one of the universities belonging to the UC network. It is established in Irvine since 1965 and although not having a lot of history it is rapidly growing (complaints about neverending works in campus are common). It is not very big, yet it is well known in several areas such as aerospace or fuel cell technologies.
The campus is organized around a circular park (Aldrich park). The paths surrounding it are the inner and outer rings. Between those, we can find all the lecture buildings. A little bit further away, but still at a walking distance there are the residential buildings. There are several communities for graduates, and all of them share a Spanish name: Verano Place, Palo Verde and Vista del Campo.
I happen to live in Palo Verde. My new apartment is much better than the one I had in Germany. There, we were 4 people sharing a house and here for the same size we are only 2 (besides the fact that Sean seems to be a great guy). Obviously, there is a price difference, but life in the States is generally more expansive so I don’t complain. I’ve heard stories about people around here paying one grand for a shared room, which is such a ripoff.
I was surprised to discover that the university mascot is an Anteater. Apparently, the sound it does when eating is “zot zot zot” which is kind of a motto around here. To be even more far-out, its name is Peter, so people can say “Peter the anteater”… No comments. However, I’ve realized that students are generally proud of these things. It is not what I expected at all. I had in mind animals like lyons, tigers, panthers, eagles, etc. but I guess the good ones were all taken
. I have to say, that I’ve seen worse though. Santa Cruz has a banana slug as a mascot. I don’t even know what that is, but it doesn’t look good.
Generally, around here people use to be proud of their universities. I have to respect that feeling though… the other two European universities I had previously attended were mostly just a place where lectures were given. It is nice to belong to some community and be proud of it. That is why UCI is like a commercial brand, and you can find plenty of merchandising: shirts, jerseys, notebooks, license plates frames (I won one in a contest
), etc. I have to admit that I’ve also fallen under the spell and got myself several t-shirts…
